Living the Cornish Life.

There is no better place to truly awaken your senses than the Cornish coast: in summer, the sun beats down on golden sandy beaches, a surfer’s paradise, stretching as far as the eye can see. And in winter, those long blustery walks on the wind-swept moors will certainly earn you a cosy spot, curled up by a roaring fire.

This part of North Cornwall has incredibly rich cultural, sporting and geographical landscapes, so see below for some insights into the best local spots to explore.

Explore and Discover.

St. Mabyn

The idyllic Cornish village of St. Mabyn is a traditional, welcoming and thriving village, which boasts a 17th century church and a fabulous village pub, which serves freshly home cooked food and, amongst the usual selection or refreshments, an excellent selection of locally brewed ales.

The village store, post office and tea/coffee shop is just a short stroll from the door, 50 metres or so from the cottage, and sells everything from your daily newspaper to fresh vegetables and ready meals, bread, cakes and local art and crafts.

Bodmin Moor is the perfect spot for walking the Cornish landscape

Bodmin Moor

St. Mabyn is well placed to explore miles of remote untamed moorland and windswept rocky tors – just 10 minutes from the two highest peaks in Cornwall, Rough Tor and Brown Willy. Take a walk up either and on a fine day you will see both North and South Cornish coasts.  The slopes of Rough Tor house an important Bronze Age settlement and is the site of a Bronze Age village in the area.

Local Destinations

On the outskirts of the village is Pencarrow House. Open to the public and particularly dog friendly, Pencarrow has been the much-loved home of the Molesworth-St Aubyns for 500 years. It’s a real family home, with magnificent gardens, tea shop and fruit sales in season. You can even let your dogs off a lead.

St Mabyn is minutes away from the Camel Trail where you can walk or cycle a flat route via Wadebridge, all the way to Padstow, or you can take the quieter route towards Bodmin and the surrounding moors. Don’t forget to stop off at the award winning Camel Valley vineyard for a glass of bubbly overlooking the most incredible Cornish countryside.

We are a 10 minute drive from the A30 which gives ample scope for touring the South coast and it’s a 25 minute drive to the beautiful estuary town of Fowey and other popular south coast resorts. Before you reach the South coast, you pass the must see Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project, which is un-missable at any time of the year.

There are several golf courses within a 10 mile radius, including the renowned links course, St.Enodoc, ranked 55th in the world and certainly one of the finest golf courses in the South West. Along with the demanding course, it has unrivalled estuary and sea views. Within 2 miles of the cottage is St.Kew golf course, the Point at Polzeath is a short drive towards the North coast and there is Trevose Golf and Country Club near Padstow.

Local Beaches

Penweir Cottage is ideally positioned to reach many of the spectacular beaches on the North and South Coast. It is about 8 miles from the renowned surfing beach of Polzeath, the sailing and waterski centres at Rock and the delightful fishing village of Port Isaac.

Within 15 minutes drive, you can be in Padstow, with 7 more beaches in close proximity: Trevor Bay, Harlyn Bay, Mother Ivy’s Bay, Boobies Bay, Constantine Bay, Treyarnon Bay and Porthcothan Bay, all of which offer a different coastal experience.

Local Eateries

If you can bring yourself to part with the very popular St Mabyn Inn, there is a great selection of pubs serving excellent food within 3 miles of the cottage; St Kew Inn, St Tudy Inn, The Maltsters in the charming village of Chapel Amble and Blisland Inn in the remote moorland village of the same name.

Our favourite brunch spot is the St Kew Farm Shop & Cafe, just 5 minutes down the road.

We are just 4 miles from Wadebridge, a typically Cornish, gorgeous old market town, with cafes and restaurants aplenty, and, with the foodie capital of Cornwall, Padstow, right on our doorstep, you won’t be short of foodie delights throughout your trip. Don’t miss the Rick Stein restaurants or the home of Great British menu winner Paul Ainsworth including the great value, vibrant pizza and pasta restaurant, Rojanos.
